History
An old Gaelic tune, called "Bunessan". The lyrics we know were written by the English poet and children's author Eleanor Farjeon (1881-1965) in 1931, specifically for the second edition of the hymnal "Songs of Praise". Note that copyright in England extends to 70 years after an author's death, which means that this work (the lyrics, that is) has protection until 2035.
Further to this, the tune "Bunessan", while it is a traditional Gaelic one, the arrangement in the hymnal was done by David Evans, 1874-1948. Also English, this means the arrangement itself is protected until 2018.
